West Java Legislator Urges Governor to Address Safety Concerns on Soekarno-Hatta Road

A member of the West Java Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Tedy Rusmawan, has urged the provincial government under Governor Dedi Mulyadi to step in and address the alarming safety issues on Jalan Soekarno-Hatta in Bandung. “We ask that this be a concern for the Governor of West Java,” Tedy said in Bandung on Wednesday. He explained that the road, which stretches across the south of Bandung City from Cibereum in the west to Cibiru in the east, suffers from a high level of vulnerability due to minimal street lighting and a lack of traffic signs, leading to accidents and muggings. “This road is extraordinarily dangerous, the public street lighting is very minimal so there have been several muggings there. Then the traffic signs are very minimal, recently two cyclists died. In fact, there was a collision involving several vehicles,” Tedy stated. He added that the danger is not only faced by motorists but also by pedestrians due to the insufficient number of pedestrian bridges (JPO) along the 18.4-kilometre road. “This also includes complaints about requests for the construction of JPOs which are currently very minimal, even though there are several high schools there. So inevitably, accidents often occur at several points on the road,” he said. Tedy acknowledged that the road, considered the longest in Bandung City, is not under the management of the West Java Provincial Government but is recorded as a central government asset. However, he believes the provincial government can intervene, as the arrangement of Soekarno-Hatta Road is a matter of life and safety. “We ask that this be a concern for the Governor. If we need to intervene, why not, because this concerns human lives,” he concluded.
