West Java Governor KDM Evaluates Old Angkot Fleet and Plans Husein Airport Reopening
The West Java Provincial Government will soon evaluate the operation of city minibus transport (angkot) deemed no longer roadworthy. The move focuses on inter-regency and inter-city transport still using ageing fleets that no longer meet public service standards.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the West Java Provincial Government will not merely enforce order but will also provide concrete solutions. The administration plans to drive a transformation in governance by empowering angkot drivers to become fleet owners through more favourable financing schemes.
In line with his environmentally friendly vision, KDM — as Dedi Mulyadi is affectionately known — also intends for the rejuvenation of city transport to be dominated by electric vehicle (EV) fleets, in order to reduce the use of conventional fossil-fuelled transport.
“We want drivers to become vehicle owners. The government is considering a financing scheme without a down payment so their welfare grows. If a driver also acts as an owner who pays in instalments and maintains their own vehicle, they will be far more disciplined than if they merely hand over daily deposits,” said KDM in Bandung on Wednesday (22/7/2026).
Furthermore, Governor KDM emphasised that the success of a mass transport system depends not only on fleet quality, but must also be supported by changes in public behaviour and improvements in urban infrastructure.
According to him, a modern transport ecosystem must be underpinned by pedestrian-friendly pavements, adequate street lighting, proper waste management, clean public facilities, and an integrated security system capable of matching residents’ high mobility.
“Modern transport is not just about good vehicles; public behaviour must also change and city services must modernise accordingly,” he asserted.
Beyond land transport, KDM also brought good news for the air transport sector. From August, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung is planned to resume operations, serving a number of domestic flights to various destinations across Indonesia.
Not only domestic routes — the West Java Provincial Government is also committed to pushing for the reactivation of international flight routes to and from the airport. In line with this plan, KDM has asked the Bandung City Government to continue improving public services so that the tourism climate and local economy can grow optimally.
Regarding the division of roles with West Java International Airport (BIJB) Kertajati in Majalengka Regency, KDM assured that coordination with the central government continues intensively. He stressed that Kertajati Airport will remain the backbone for pilgrimage flights.
“Let there be no misunderstanding. Hajj and Umrah flights will continue to use Kertajati Airport,” KDM concluded.
