West Java Governor Evaluates Old Angkots and Plans Husein Airport Reopening to Revamp Transport

The Provincial Government of West Java will soon evaluate the operation of city transport (angkot) services deemed no longer roadworthy. This initiative focuses on inter-regency and intercity transport still using old fleets that no longer meet public service standards. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the provincial government is not merely enforcing regulations but also providing concrete solutions. The administration plans to drive a governance transformation by empowering angkot drivers to become fleet owners through more favourable financing schemes. In line with an environmentally friendly vision, KDM—the Governor’s nickname—also proposed that the rejuvenation of city transport be dominated by electric vehicle (EV) fleets to reduce reliance on conventional fossil-fuel transport. “We want drivers to become vehicle owners. The government is devising a financing scheme without a down payment so their welfare can improve. If drivers act as owners who pay instalments and maintain their vehicles, they will be far more disciplined than if they merely hand over daily takings,” KDM said in Bandung. He further stressed that the success of a mass transport system depends not only on fleet quality but also on changes in public culture and improvements to urban infrastructure. According to him, a modern transport ecosystem must be supported by pedestrian-friendly pavements, adequate street lighting, proper waste management, clean public facilities, and an integrated security system capable of matching high citizen mobility. “Modern transport is not just about good vehicles; people’s behaviour must also change and city services must be modern,” he asserted. In addition to land transport, KDM also delivered good news for the aviation sector. Starting in August, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung is planned to resume operations serving several domestic flights to various regions in Indonesia. Beyond domestic routes, the provincial government is also committed to pushing for the reactivation of international flights to and from the airport. Alongside this plan, KDM has asked the Bandung City Government to continuously improve the quality of public services so that the tourism climate and local economic sector can grow optimally.
