West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi Says No Protests Over Diponegoro Road Closure as Alternative Route Opens

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG – West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has responded to parties protesting the closure of Diponegoro Road for the redevelopment of the Gedung Sate area. According to him, there are currently no residents protesting because an alternative road has been prepared to temporarily replace Diponegoro Road.

“Where exactly are these protesters? It seems no one is protesting now. It feels like nobody is protesting anymore,” he said on Thursday (16/7/2026).

He said the protests by residents took place earlier, when the road was about to be closed and no alternative was yet available. However, an alternative road circling Gasibu has now been prepared, making journeys more comfortable.

He assured that the alternative route would be comfortable for both motorcyclists and car drivers, adding that he had travelled along the road three times himself.

Previously, access to Diponegoro Road in Bandung city was temporarily closed until 7 September 2026 due to ongoing works to redevelop the grounds of Gedung Sate up to Gasibu, an initiative of the West Java Provincial Government. A number of traffic engineering measures have been implemented so that vehicles can pass through smoothly.

Observations show that vehicles coming from the east of Diponegoro Road heading towards Cilamaya Road, Sulanjana Road or Trunojoyo Road can pass via Sentot Alibasyah Road, Surapati Road and then Majapahit Road. Meanwhile, vehicles from the west of Diponegoro Road heading east can take the route in reverse.

A number of project workers were seen repairing the road area where the library building formerly stood, as well as the pedestrian pavements. Several residents were seen exercising in the Gasibu area. Vehicle traffic was still sparse and not yet busy at around 10.17 local time.
