West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi expressed condolences regarding the landslide that struck the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City. The facility is managed by the Jakarta Provincial Government.

“We support efforts to ensure TPST Bantargebang is handled properly and that no further landslides occur,” said Mulyadi in a statement on Monday 9 March. He urged all parties to treat the disaster as a learning opportunity and remain vigilant, as such incidents often occur without warning.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) of Jakarta continued recovery efforts at the site in Ciketing Udik Village, Bantargebang District, Bekasi City. A body discovered on Sunday afternoon brought the death toll to five, with four people still missing. Four others have been rescued. The victims include warung owner Enda Widayanti, 25; warung owner Sumine, 60; truck driver Dedi Sutrisno; and Irwan Supriatin. The four survivors are Budiman, Joha, Safifudin, and Slamet.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq issued a stark warning that the Bantargebang landslide must serve as an urgent alarm for the Jakarta Provincial Government to abandon open-dumping waste management methods. “This incident should never have occurred if waste management followed proper procedures. Bantargebang must be a lesson for us all to make immediate changes for the sake of human life and environmental conservation,” said the Minister.

Meanwhile, a member of the Jakarta Provincial Parliament, Hardiyanto Kenneth, called for a comprehensive evaluation by provincial authorities following the disaster.
