West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has stressed that the provincial government will not change the province’s name to Tatar Sunda, Sunda, or Pasundan. The clarification follows widespread rumours on social media claiming there was a plan to change the name of West Java Province. According to Dedi, the circulating information is false and did not originate from the regional government. He assured that the West Java Provincial Government remains focused on executing its work programmes and has no agenda to change the province’s name. ‘We emphasise that someone has been floating discourse and creating stories on social media about changing the name of West Java to Tatar Sunda. I am saying that the entire narrative is fabricated. The West Java Provincial Government will remain focused on working and will not concern itself with changing the name. The name remains West Java,’ Dedi said via his official Instagram account. The statement also dispelled speculation regarding a potential change to the province’s identity. Deputy Speaker of the West Java Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Ono Surono also confirmed that there has never been an official proposal from either the DPRD or the West Java Provincial Government to change the province’s name. Ono clarified that the news claiming the DPRD had proposed a name change for West Java is not factual. ‘I reiterate that there has been no official proposal, neither from the Governor of West Java nor from the West Java DPRD regarding this matter,’ Ono stated on Wednesday, 8 July 2026. He explained that the discussion only involved following up on community aspirations through a review mechanism, not an approval to change the province’s name. Ono explained that the discourse originated from a letter submitted by the Community for the Study of the Name Change of West Java Province to the Chairman of the West Java DPRD, Buky Wibawa, on 6 January 2025. The letter proposed changing the name of West Java Province to Tatar Sunda, Sunda, or Pasundan. Following the letter, the West Java DPRD held an audience with the proposing community on 22 May 2025.
