West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi Denies Province Will Be Renamed Tatar Sunda

Bandung, VIVA – West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has emphasised that the West Java Provincial Government will not change the province’s name to Tatar Sunda, Sunda, or Pasundan. This clarification follows widespread rumours on social media suggesting a plan to rename the province.

According to Dedi, the circulating information is incorrect and did not originate from the local government. He ensured that the West Java Provincial Government remains focused on executing its work programmes and has no agenda to alter the province’s name.

“We emphasise that there are those circulating narratives on social media claiming there will be a name change from West Java to Tatar Sunda. I say that the entire sequence is someone else’s fabrication. The West Java Provincial Government will continue to focus on working and will not concern itself with a name change. The name remains West Java,” Dedi stated via his official Instagram account.

This statement simultaneously refutes the growing speculation regarding a potential change in the identity of West Java.

DPRD Confirms No Official Proposal

A similar clarification was provided by the Deputy Chairman of the West Java DPRD, Ono Surono. The legislator, representing the North Coast (Pantura) constituency of West Java, asserted that, to date, there has never been an official proposal from either the DPRD or the West Java Provincial Government to change the province’s name.

According to Ono, reports claiming that the DPRD has proposed a name change for West Java are inconsistent with the facts.

“I reiterate that there is no official proposal, from either the Governor of West Java or the West Java DPRD, regarding this matter,” Ono said in a statement on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

He emphasised that any discussions previously held were merely to follow up on community aspirations through a study mechanism, rather than an agreement to change the province’s name.

Originating from Community Aspirations

Ono explained that the discourse regarding the name change actually began with a letter submitted by the West Java Province Name Change Study Community to the Chairman of the West Java DPRD, Buky Wibawa, on 6 January 2025. The letter contained a proposal to change the name of West Java Province to Tatar Sunda, Sunda, or Pasundan.

In response to the letter, the West Java DPRD held an audience with the proposing community on 22 May 2025.
