Cirebon (ANTARA) - West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has emphasised that culture must be positioned as both an identity and a source of economic development in the construction efforts within Cirebon Regency, the province’s locality.

During his working visit to Cirebon on Thursday, Dedi Mulyadi stated that culture should not merely be regarded as a heritage but must be processed into a living force with economic value.

“When culture can be articulated well, an area will grow into a prosperous regency,” he said.

Dedi assessed that Cirebon possesses significant potential from a cultural perspective, which can be developed as an engine for development.

He highlighted the importance of preserving and optimising historical legacies, including the existence of the keraton as a centre of civilisation.

He mentioned that the arrangement of architecture characteristic of Cirebonese style, along with strengthening the historical values of figures like Sunan Gunung Jati, form an important foundation in building the region’s identity.

Dedi stressed the importance of building community character to support tourism governance. He cited Yogyakarta and Bali as examples that have strong identities.

“Cirebon has great strength from a cultural aspect. This must become a symbol of development with the spirit and culture of Kacirebonan,” he said.

He added that the provincial government is currently prioritising the equitable distribution of road infrastructure in West Java, targeted for completion in 2026.

After that, he said, development will be directed towards strengthening regional branding based on culture in 2027, including the arrangement of urban areas in Cirebon.

Meanwhile, Cirebon Regent Imron stated that the commemoration of the 544th anniversary of Cirebon Regency is not merely ceremonial but a moment for reflection to strengthen the direction of regional development.

He explained that the anniversary serves as a foundation for evaluating achievements and formulating strategic steps forward.

“The values inherited from our ancestors must be preserved and integrated into modern development,” he said.
