West Java Government Prioritises Construction of Small Mosques Across Regions

The West Java Provincial Government (Pemprov Jabar) will prioritise the construction of ‘tajuk’, or small mosques, in various regions. The plan aims to provide spiritual facilities for residents that are available at all times.

This was conveyed by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, often called KDM, during the ‘Commemoration of the Great Islamic Day of Muharram 1448 Hijriah’ event, which carried the theme ‘Strengthening Love for Islam and Islam of Love’. The event was held in the Main Hall of the Al-Jabbar Grand Mosque on Tuesday (9/6).

“We want to build small mosques in communities that need them at any time. Grand mosques are already plentiful in West Java,” KDM said in a written statement on Friday (19/6/2026).

He stated that the construction and development of existing ‘tajuk’ in communities would be carried out in stages and integrated with assistance from all parties. This approach means the ‘tajuk’ will not require a new Mosque Prosperity Council (DKM).

“We want to build mosques that have congregations, places where children learn the Quran, places of worship for the people there,” he added.

KDM observed a shift in the use of mosques, from places for contemplation, prostration, and building a spiritual relationship between humans as creatures and the Creator, into recreational facilities.

“If a mosque becomes a recreational facility rather than a spiritual one, it will only become a place for selfies, not a place for contemplation,” he stressed.

He further explained that the essence of worship lies in a person’s relationship with God, not in the grandeur of the place of worship visited.

“Contemplation can be done anywhere. In a bedroom, a small prayer room, under a tree, at the edge of a rice field, by a lake, on a mountainside, or at the ocean’s edge. The place is meaningless; the most important thing is the silence of the soul to be able to present God in the depths of the heart,” KDM concluded.
