West Java Government 'Marries' 13 Maung Schools with Dozens of Businesses

The West Java Provincial Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to integrate 13 Sekolah Manusia Unggul (Maung) with dozens of businesses in a bid to produce job-ready graduates and break the chain of unemployment among vocational school leavers in the region. This strategic move to ‘marry’ vocational education with the industrial sector has been rolled out as a concrete solution to address employment challenges and prepare future leaders ahead of the peak demographic bonus. Herman stressed that if this demographic bonus is not managed seriously through a link and match scheme, West Java is feared to fall into the middle-income trap. Therefore, close collaboration with the business world is absolutely necessary. Head of the West Java Education Office, Purwanto, detailed that the partnership involves 13 Maung Vocational High Schools (SMK) with 99 skill concentrations and 26 corporate representatives. Among them are PT Solu Filantropi Teknologi, PT Usaha Adi Sanggoro, Novotel Bogor Hotel, and PT Sepa Coklat Indonesia. Purwanto assessed that the potential for strengthening student competencies in West Java is actually very abundant, considering the region has thousands of corporations ready to become real practice spaces for students. ‘Industry can become a living lab for children, so they know the skills needed by the industry,’ said Purwanto. According to data from the West Java Education Office, there are currently 1,123 potential industries in West Java whose support can be optimised to boost the quality standards of SMK graduates at both regional and national levels.
