West Java Establishes Milangkala Tatar Sunda as Annual Routine Agenda
Sumedang (ANTARA) - The West Java Provincial Government has established Milangkala Tatar Sunda as an annual routine agenda to be carried out on a continuous basis. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi in Sumedang on Saturday stated that this policy has been strengthened by the issuance of a Governor’s Regulation, which has been approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs. “This activity (Milangkala Tatar Sunda) is routine. That’s why it gave birth to what is called Milangkala Tatar Sunda. It will be stipulated in the Governor’s Regulation, with the approval of the Minister of Home Affairs on 18 May,” he said. He also explained that the scope of the celebration is not limited to the administrative areas of West Java but can also involve other regions that have Sunda cultural ties. He further explained that this year’s peak commemoration will be held in the form of a musical drama around the Gedung Sate area, where the courtyard is currently undergoing landscaping. On that occasion, he also mentioned that in the future, the series of commemorations is hoped to form a more complete cultural route, not just centred in one point. “From here (Sumedang) to the origin, formerly to Kawali. From Kawali, it will then pass through Cianjur. Hopefully in the future, all the regions passed through can participate, no longer limited as now because there are still time constraints,” he said. On that occasion, he added that the routine implementation of this activity is also considered to have significant economic impact potential for the community, especially through strengthening the MSME sector and tourism. “Of course high (economic potential). Yes, every celebration activity always gives birth to MSMEs. And the most important thing is that this year it might be sudden. Next year Sumedang will already dress up to be more prepared,” he said. Previously, the West Java Provincial Government had also designated 18 May as Sunda Tatar Day, formalised through West Java Governor’s Regulation Number 13 of 2026 on the Implementation of Sunda Tatar Day. The parties stated that this designation is not merely adding to the regional commemoration calendar but is an effort to return the identity of the West Java community to its traditional roots that are more than a millennium old. With the Governor’s Regulation and the strengthening of the historical basis, the West Java Provincial Government targets Milangkala Tatar Sunda to become an annual cultural agenda that is not only ceremonial but also has sustainable historical, identity, and economic value.
