West Java Education Office Reveals Chronology of SMAN 1 Purwakarta Students Mocking Teacher, This Was the Beginning
The West Java Education Office (Disdik Jabar) has revealed the chronology of a bullying case against a teacher by students at SMAN 1 Purwakarta, which went viral on social media. Head of Disdik Jabar, Purwanto, explained that the incident began during a Civics (PKN) lesson taught by Atun Syamsiah, known as Bu Atun. At that time, the students were working on group assignments themed around diversity, including making food and performing regional arts. Initially, the groups had been assigned, but just before the presentations, the order was changed, forcing nine students originally scheduled for the second slot to move to the final session. “During the lesson, they seemed perfectly normal, even taking photos with the teacher,” Purwanto told reporters at SMAN 1 Purwakarta on Monday, 20 April 2026. However, after the teacher left the classroom, the students engaged in inappropriate actions, such as showing the middle finger and behaviour deemed harassing. The actions were recorded and subsequently went viral on social media. “The actions were clearly deliberate, even if possibly triggered by disappointment. But this cannot be justified,” he stated. As follow-up, the West Java Education Office has ensured that the nine students will not be expelled from school. They will only undergo intensive guidance for three months, including social activities in the school and community environment. Additionally, the students will receive psychological counselling, daily supervision from class guardians, and weekly evaluations with parents. According to Purwanto, the students’ right to education remains fulfilled, but it must be accompanied by character building.
