Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - West Java DPRD’s Commission V backs the implementation of the Senior Women’s School programme ‘Nyaah Ka Indung’ as a step to improve the quality of life of female elderly to stay healthy, active, and productive. West Java Provincial DPRD member Siti Muntamah said the senior school programme is important because the elderly population in West Java continues to rise. ‘I, as a member of the DPRD, always support matters relating to women, families and children, and the elderly are part of family affairs,’ she said in Bandung on Wednesday. According to her, the existence of the senior school is needed to be a empowerment forum for around 5.9 million elderly in West Java. Meanwhile, West Java DP3AKB Head Siska Gerfianti said the programme is driven by the increasing number of ageing population in West Java. ‘Our latest aging population figure is 11 percent, so 5.9 million residents are elderly, with the number of elderly women higher than men,’ she said. She explained that around 51.71 percent of the total elderly in West Java are women, hence a non-formal education programme specifically for elderly women is needed. According to Siska, the Senior Women’s School ‘Nyaah Ka Indung’ is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and psychosocial support for elderly women so they can live aging years with higher quality. ‘Through the Senior Women’s School ’Nyaah Ka Indung’, it is hoped that elderly women can continue to be empowered and remain actively involved in the family,’ she said.
