Bandung, West Java — The West Java DPRD’s Commission II, together with the West Java provincial government, will tighten oversight of the slaughter of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah. Arief Maoshul Affandy, a member of Commission II of the West Java DPRD, said the oversight is intended to ensure the slaughtering process runs in accordance with Islamic Sharia while also meeting health and animal-welfare standards. First, ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections; we ensure that medical personnel go to the field to check the health of the animals before and after slaughter, he said. He added that the administration also emphasises the application of animal welfare during the slaughter process. According to him, sacrificial animals must not experience stress before slaughter, and the use of appropriate tools is an important matter. ‘We emphasise that sacrificial animals must not be stressed when about to be slaughtered. The use of tools such as very sharp knives is a non-negotiable standard,’ he said. Arief added that the Sharia aspect is also a major concern to ensure the slaughter is valid under religious law and to produce meat that is safe for consumption. ‘Thirdly, of course, halal certification. The slaughter process must be conducted properly in accordance with Sharia to ensure the meat quality is healthily guaranteed,’ he said.
