West Java Deputy Governor Threatens to Sack Civil Servants Proven to be LGBT

West Java Deputy Governor Erwan Setiawan has issued a threat of strict sanctions against civil servants within the West Java Provincial Government who are proven to be involved in networks or part of LGBT groups. The sanction takes the form of dismissal or sacking. This step is taken as a form of serious commitment by the regional government in combating the phenomenon, while coordinating with the West Java Regional Leadership Coordination Forum to formulate strict legal enforcement. “I have said several times that we, the West Java Provincial Government, are combating what is called LGBT in the West Java region,” Erwan said in a statement in Bandung, as reported by Antara on Sunday. Erwan explained that all forms of sanctions imposed on civil servants under his authority will strictly refer to the provisions of the laws and regulations applicable to state apparatus. If the behaviour or activity meets the elements of a serious violation or even enters the criminal realm, the West Java Provincial Government will not hesitate to immediately hand over the relevant individuals to law enforcement officers. “If it is in accordance with the legislation, the heaviest sanction is dismissal. And if there is any criminal act, we will hand it over to law enforcement officers,” Erwan added. Erwan requested the active role of the wider community to dare to report if they find strong indications of legal violations related to these activities. This step is to narrow the space for movement and detect potential violations in the government and public spheres. The public is urged to immediately compile complaints along with valid supporting evidence so that they can be followed up quickly and precisely by the relevant agencies and the police. “I hope the public provides accurate reports, both to the police and to us, so that we can immediately take steps according to our authority,” he said. Previously, Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasised that Presidential Regulation Number 111 of 2025 is the government’s basis for countering the spread of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer as part of efforts to prevent moral degradation. Yusril, after delivering a National Oration at PGRI Kanjuruhan University Malang in Malang City, East Java, on Tuesday, said the government is obliged to protect the public from various threats deemed capable of damaging national and state life. “The government is obliged to protect the people, the entire nation from the threat of moral degradation which will ultimately damage the joints of our social, national, and state life,” he said. Yusril said the government has categorised the spread of LGBTQ as a non-military threat through Presidential Regulation Number 111 of 2025 concerning the General Policy on State Defence. According to him, this regulation must be respected by all levels of society as part of a shared commitment to maintaining the nation’s integrity from various non-military threats.
