West Java Clean Water Crisis Spreads to 15 Regencies and Cities

The clean water crisis in West Java has been reported to be continuously expanding, now covering 15 regencies and cities. According to data from the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) as of 28 July 2026, the crisis has affected 205,567 individuals from 61,504 families spread across 89 sub-districts. The West Java BPBD noted that the drought has hit at least 194 villages and urban wards. Currently, around 200,000 residents are experiencing difficulties in obtaining clean water supplies for their daily needs. The regional government, together with BPBD, continues to channel water aid to the affected locations. Three areas have reported the most severe impacts: Bogor Regency, Karawang Regency, and Bekasi Regency. In Bogor Regency, the crisis has reached 24 sub-districts comprising 87 villages and urban wards. A total of 100,830 residents or 29,504 families in the area have been directly affected. In response to the conditions in Bogor, the regency government together with the local BPBD have distributed 802,500 litres of clean water aid. Similar measures have been taken in Karawang Regency, where the crisis has hit 9 villages in 4 sub-districts, affecting a total of 12,000 residents. The Karawang Regency BPBD is collaborating with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), the National Alms Agency (Baznas), several foundations, the River Basin Agency (BBWS), and the regional water utility company (PDAM) to distribute more than 237,000 litres of clean water. This inter-agency synergy is expected to ease the burden on residents struggling to access clean water. Meanwhile, in Bekasi Regency, the clean water crisis has affected 6 villages in 3 sub-districts. The Bekasi Regency BPBD has dispatched water aid to 26 different locations to ensure the basic needs of residents are met. ‘The water crisis is affecting Cibarusah, Serang Baru, and Bojongmangu sub-districts. We have recorded that 2,787 families or 7,634 residents are experiencing a clean water crisis,’ said Agus Suparno, Secretary of the Bekasi Regency BPBD. Monitoring and water distribution efforts are being carried out intensively across all affected areas in West Java to anticipate the further spread of the drought’s impact.
