Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), a series of 146 earthquakes struck Bandung regency, West Java, between 11 August and 21 September 2026. At least 14 of the seismic events were felt by residents in Cisewu, Talegong, Pangalengan and surrounding areas.

The earthquakes ranged in magnitude from M1.0 to M3.4 and produced shaking at intensity II–III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At these levels, tremors are clearly felt indoors, like a passing lorry; light hanging objects may sway, and several people may feel the shaking.

“The earthquakes were shallow. Their epicentres formed along a southwest–northeast direction, around 5–8 kilometres west of the Kendang segment of the Garsela Fault and north of the Kencana segment,” BMKG said in a post on its official Instagram account on Sunday (11 October 2026).

BMKG said a network of seismic sensors is deployed throughout West Java to monitor seismic activity.

“The earthquake sources are movements along active faults on land that extend across West Java,” the agency said.

BMKG added that earthquakes do not always occur directly above faults that have already been mapped.

“BMKG’s 35 seismic sensors are spread across West Java and can record micro-earthquakes, or low-magnitude earthquakes. These records help BMKG identify patterns of seismic activity, locate earthquake sources and study fault activity,” it wrote on @infobmkg.
