West Jakarta's Strategy to Address Waste Disposal Restrictions to Bantar Gebang
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta Environmental Agency (Sudin LH) is implementing a phased transportation strategy to respond to the 38% quota restriction on waste disposal to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantar Gebang.
Head of the West Jakarta Environmental Agency (Sudin LH), Achmad Hariadi, stated when contacted in Jakarta on Monday that phased transportation means waste from five small-capacity transport units will be compacted into one large-capacity truck.
“So, the small trucks will not be operated to Bantar Gebang, but their carrying capacity will be compacted into large trucks to be transported to Bantar Gebang,” he said.
According to him, the reduction in West Jakarta’s waste disposal quota to Bantar Gebang from 308 to 190 trucks per day can be managed with this strategy.
“We send two trips. What was usually one trip becomes two trips. One trip with a large truck carries the usual load, and the other trip collects from several small trucks,” he said.
Furthermore, they are prioritising the handling of waste piles on protocol roads.
“Waste on protocol roads will be cleared first, ensuring no accumulation. As for certain TPS, we handle them with the available vehicles,” he said.
Previously, the West Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jakbar) acknowledged the cause of waste accumulation at several temporary collection points (TPS) in the area, including at Jalan Kali Kanal Banjir Barat (KBB) Depo, Kalianyar, due to the quota restriction on disposal to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantar Gebang.
According to him, since the landslide incident on 8 March, the quota for waste transport to the TPST has been limited, from previously 308 trucks per day to now 190 trucks. This means approximately 118 trucks of waste cannot be transported there each day.
Nevertheless, residents continue to produce daily waste, including in Kalianyar, Tambora.
Waste that is not transported from the TPS depo on Jalan Kali Kanal Banjir Barat (KBB) does not stop residents from producing waste.
The TPS, which should only be used as a depot for waste from carts before being picked up by trucks, has instead become a dumping site by the community.
“This leads to accumulation. For Kalianyar, if household waste is held back, it is not disposed of because there is no TPS. In the end, residents use the riverbank as a TPS. Even though it is a depo TPS,” said Hariadi.
