West Jakarta Water Resources Office optimises pumps to mitigate flooding
Jakarta — The West Jakarta Water Resources Sub-office (Sudin SDA) has placed hundreds of pumps on standby to address flooding that temporarily inundated 33 residential blocks (RT) across the district on Monday, 9 March.
“Our response approach remains consistent — we rely on pumps. We are operating both stationary and mobile pump units,” said West Jakarta SDA Head Purwanti Suryandari during a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The West Jakarta SDA operates 49 pump stations with 152 stationary pumps. Additionally, 70 mobile pumps have been deployed across multiple flood-prone locations throughout West Jakarta.
However, recent flood management efforts have been hampered by significantly elevated river water levels, which prevent immediate mitigation through pumping alone.
“The challenge yesterday was due to river overflow, which made our operations difficult. But once the river receded, we were able to resume operations,” Suryandari said.
“We are maximising drainage clearance and channel/river dredging efforts,” she added.
