West Jakarta Sub-district Holds Recycled Material Fashion Contest for Independence Day

Kemanggisan sub-district, Palmerah district, West Jakarta, held a creative fashion competition using recycled materials to celebrate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.

The competition took place at the Manggis Child-Friendly Integrated Public Space (RPTRA) on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, two days after the commemoration of Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence.

“This competition is open to the public. Each RW (neighbourhood unit) is free to send representatives, especially PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment) cadres, with a maximum of two people. The competition showcases unique fashion creations made from recycled waste, such as plastic waste, bottle caps, cardboard and so on,” said Kemanggisan sub-district head Tubagus Rafiudin when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to him, recycled waste can be transformed into clothing with attractive designs, ranging from party gowns and traditional attire to hero costumes.

“This competition is not merely to enliven Indonesia’s Independence Day, but also serves as a form of public education about the importance of waste management and waste utilisation, while implementing DKI Jakarta Governor’s Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the movement for waste sorting and processing at source,” said Rafiudin.

He stated that registration for the creative fashion competition would close on 10 August 2026.

Winners of the creative fashion competition will receive cash prizes, to be distributed on the peak night of the 81st Indonesian Independence Day celebration in the Kemanggisan sub-district area.

“Through this competition, we want to encourage residents to care more about the environment. Waste that has been considered useless can apparently become beautiful and creative clothing, while instilling a spirit of environmental love wrapped in the spirit of independence,” Rafiudin added.
