West Jakarta PPSU Officers Sell Compost Fertiliser from Processed Dry Leaves

Public Infrastructure and Facilities Handling (PPSU) officers in Jelambar Urban Village, West Jakarta, have sold 101 bags of compost fertiliser produced from dry leaves through a preorder system. The dry leaves are collected from the surrounding environment, then shredded and mixed with an EM4 solution and water. “After mixing, the compost material is placed into storage barrels and fermented for approximately two months until it is ready to be marketed to residents interested in using environmentally friendly organic fertiliser,” said Jelambar Urban Village Head Pradista Machdala Putra on Wednesday. Pradista said each bag of compost is priced at Rp5,000. “So besides reducing waste that ends up in disposal sites, this activity also provides economic benefits for the officers,” he said. Meanwhile, a member of the Jelambar Urban Village PPSU, Syifa, explained that utilising dry leaves to make compost is a simple yet effective step in maintaining environmental cleanliness. “Processing compost from dry leaves not only reduces pollution caused by burning waste, but also has economic value. The compost can be used personally or sold to residents who need organic fertiliser. It’s a decent additional income,” he added. Previously, the West Jakarta City Administration formed a Waste Segregation Task Force at the city, sub-district, and urban village levels. “As part of this programme, each urban village is targeted to have at least one pilot community unit in implementing the Waste Segregation Movement in accordance with DKI Jakarta Governor Regulation Number 102 of 2021,” said West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah on Tuesday. Iin said the volume of waste in West Jakarta currently reaches approximately 2,200 tonnes per day. She noted that most of the waste accumulation consists of organic and inorganic waste that should be manageable from the source. “We can no longer rely solely on slogans. Waste management must be carried out concretely and involve all parties so that the waste problem can be resolved together,” Iin said.
