West Jakarta motorbike thief tests positive for methamphetamine, claims to hear 'voices' before theft
A motorbike thief identified as MS, 35, claimed to have heard voices instructing him to meet President Prabowo Subianto in Menteng, Central Jakarta, before committing the theft of a motorcycle in Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta.
Police confirmed the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine (shabu) following a urine test.
“He said the voices instructed him to meet Prabowo in Menteng, Central Jakarta. Afterwards, the voices directed him to the boarding house where the crime occurred, and he stole the motorcycle,” said Assistant Commissioner Alexander Tengbunan, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Grogol Petamburan Police Station, to journalists in Jakarta on Thursday evening.
Police stated the suspect carried out the motorcycle theft at a boarding house in Wijaya Kusuma, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, on Wednesday morning (27 May).
Initially, Alex said, the suspect loitered around the victim’s motorcycle parking area before entering the premises, picking the lock, and pushing the motorcycle towards the road.
While pushing the motorcycle, the suspect was even assisted by a ride-hailing driver who mistakenly believed the vehicle had broken down.
“The driver was unaware the motorcycle was stolen and helped push it,” Alex said.
The suspect was apprehended by Sunda Kelapa Police Station before being taken into custody by Grogol Petamburan Police Station on Wednesday evening (27 May).
“Sunda Kelapa Police Station identified and secured the suspect. Then our Criminal Investigation Unit collected the suspect and the evidence, a Honda motorcycle,” Alex stated.
Police are currently investigating the veracity of the suspect’s hallucinations.
During the urine test, MS tested positive for methamphetamine (shabu).
“When the urine test was conducted, the result was positive for shabu. We are still investigating whether the suspect genuinely has a mental health condition or if this is a fabricated excuse,” Alexander explained.
Additionally, police found a psychiatric certificate in the suspect’s bag, but its authenticity has not yet been confirmed.
“We cannot verify whether this document is officially issued by medical professionals or fabricated. We will schedule further psychiatric evaluation,” he said.
Authorities are also investigating whether the suspect committed other thefts previously.
“We are still looking into the suspect’s previous activities,” Alex said.
Meanwhile, the stolen motorcycle had not been sold by the suspect and has been secured by police as evidence.
