West Jakarta Mayor Responds to Ranking Second in Number of Online Gambling Players

West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah stated she will coordinate with the police following reports that her area has the second-highest number of online gambling players in Indonesia, totalling 89,320 people, after Bogor Regency. “We will bring this issue to the police, of course. We will discuss with the Police Chief to determine the next steps,” Iin said in Jakarta on Friday. According to Iin, the data published by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) must be seen as an alarm for the public. “In principle, when this information emerges, we need clarity on the data’s veracity. But at the very least, it serves as a warning for all of us to prepare and be aware. This awareness is not just about law enforcement, but mitigation must be carried out by everyone,” she said. Iin also emphasised the role of the family as the smallest social system in preventing online gambling. “At the very least, I hope families will act. Parents must also ensure that their children and family members are all in good condition, meaning they follow the rules. When there is inappropriate behaviour, parents have an obligation to remind and serve as role models,” Iin stated. Based on regional distribution, West Jakarta ranks second with 89,320 players and total accumulated deposits of Rp600.6 billion. Three areas in Greater Jakarta have the highest number of online gambling players: Bogor Regency with 103,092 players and deposits of Rp414.4 billion, West Jakarta with 89,320 players and deposits of Rp600.6 billion, and East Jakarta with 81,750 players and deposits of Rp425.9 billion. The PPATK noted that of the ten areas with the most players, four are from DKI Jakarta, four from West Java, and two from Banten, forming a Greater Jakarta cluster as the national centre of online gambling activity. The PPATK also mapped the sub-districts with the highest number of online gambling players in Greater Jakarta, with Cengkareng in West Jakarta topping the list. The top five sub-districts are Cengkareng with 21,497 players, Cakung with 14,664, Tanjung Priok with 13,769, Kebayoran Lama with 9,948, and North Bekasi with 7,793 players.
