West Jakarta Mayor explores waste processing technology collaboration in Kembangan

West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah has revealed that she is exploring collaboration with private parties possessing technology and competence in inorganic waste processing.

“Going forward, we will hold a meeting to discuss this technology and the cooperation so that it can be implemented soon,” she said during a visit to the TPS 3R RW 01 Meruya Selatan, managed by the West Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency, on Friday.

Iin said the exploration was based on an evaluation showing that inorganic waste with no economic value can be processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and briquette raw materials for the cement industry.

Meanwhile, organic waste can be processed into compost, although the quality of the processing still needs to be improved.

“Organic waste is processed into compost. But the quality of the compost still needs to be improved because the organic material entering is still mixed with inorganic waste,” she said.

She noted that residents of the Puri Indah complex have been sorting organic and inorganic waste for about two years.

Iin appreciated the residents’ concern in sorting waste. However, according to her, processing organic waste into compost still requires strengthening in terms of education, technology, and collaboration.

“Managing organic waste for compost fertiliser is not as easy as turning the palm of one’s hand. It takes time and continuous education, as well as intervention from various components of society,” she said.

Meanwhile, inorganic waste management at the site involves the Sirsak Community, which regularly collaborates with residents and private parties.
