West Jakarta Mayor Affirms Safety Amid Viral 'Gotham City' Nickname

West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah has addressed the viral ‘Gotham City’ nickname given to the area by netizens on social media, which arose from perceptions of rising night-time crime. She affirmed that public safety and order in West Jakarta remain secure and controlled, citing police data showing crime rates are no higher than other parts of Jakarta.

‘The recent Gotham City issue was discussed with the District Police Chief, who confirmed that crime levels in West Jakarta are not higher than other areas. On average, conditions are controlled and safe (TKA),’ Iin stated after leading the Community Early Warning Forum (FKDM) readiness parade at the West Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Monday, 1 June 2026.

The nickname ‘Gotham City’ refers to the fictional Batman city known for high crime and ominous night-time atmosphere.

Iin highlighted that public activity in open spaces late at night indicates the area remains conducive. Residents continue to use public and private facilities, including sports venues like Marudja Sport Park, well into the evening.

‘This shows the public feels safe and comfortable to carry out activities,’ she added.

While the West Jakarta government urges heightened vigilance and preventive measures for personal safety, it also advises residents to reduce non-essential night-time activities, particularly during high-risk hours. Iin specifically reminded women traveling at night to avoid going alone and to have companions for safety.
