Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta Environmental Sub-Department (Sudin LH) is intensifying the “gerebek pilah” movement and workshops to reduce waste production at the upstream level, or among residents.

West Jakarta Sudin LH Head, Achmad Hariadi, stated that in this movement, officers visit residents’ homes or flats to learn how people sort their waste.

“So we go directly to residents’ homes. If the waste is still mixed (organic and inorganic), we educate them to sort the waste. That’s the waste sorting raid,” Hariadi said when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The activity has already begun in several locations and will continue in other locations thematically.

“A while ago, we started at Rusun Cinta Kasih, RW 17 Cengkareng Timur. Then we also carried it out in Kembangan in collaboration with the Fire Department; they support this programme too,” Hariadi said.

“Next, we will visit residents’ homes in RW 04 Tegal Alur, Kalideres, then RW 09 Keagungan, Tamansari. Then at Rusun Tambora, then to RW 07 Slipi and RW 01 Tanjung Duren Selatan,” he added.

This programme will target every RW in West Jakarta as it has become a strategy for addressing waste issues approved by West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah.

“So we will strive to have two waste sorting raid activities per week,” Hariadi explained.

He added that the restriction on West Jakarta’s waste disposal quota to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) from 308 to 190 trucks per day must serve as an alarm for the public to become more aware of the importance of waste management.

“Given this situation, we can no longer rely solely on TPST Bantargebang. So, residents must be wise in managing waste,” he said.
