West Jakarta intensifies outreach on used cooking oil utilisation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta Administration (Pemkot Jakbar) is intensifying outreach on the management of used cooking oil waste to strengthen public awareness in utilising it appropriately.

West Jakarta Deputy Mayor Yuli Hartono stated that the outreach will be ramped up to the sub-district and neighbourhood association levels, with coordination at the district level. According to him, this is necessary to provide understanding of the benefits of managing used cooking oil.

“Coordination with district offices needs to be strengthened again, particularly in weekly meetings. Thus, outreach to sub-district heads and neighbourhood associations can be more comprehensive, both in terms of technical distribution of jerry cans and understanding the benefits of this programme (used oil collection) for the community,” Yuli said in Jakarta on Monday.

In the period from January to March 2026, 30,000 litres of used cooking oil were successfully collected in West Jakarta. This achievement positions West Jakarta as the area collecting the most used cooking oil in Jakarta.

The West Jakarta Administration is partnering with Rumah Sosial Kutub (RSK) in the used cooking oil collection programme through the waste and used oil alms movement. This collaboration aims to enhance public awareness in managing used cooking oil in an environmentally friendly manner.

On the same occasion, Rumah Sosial Kutub Maintenance Manager Muhammad Abdel Achrian said the programme is one of the efforts to encourage public concern for the environment.

RSK processes used cooking oil waste into useful products to prevent environmental pollution, including supporting renewable energy. The used cooking oil waste is collected from households and businesses, then processed and exported or utilised domestically.

The proceeds from the sale of processed used cooking oil waste are distributed for social programmes, humanitarian activities, and community empowerment, such as education allowances, health assistance, provision of cleaning equipment, and supporting urban farming programmes in community environments.

“We manage this used cooking oil responsibly for export or processing domestically into environmentally friendly fuels like biodiesel or biofuel. The results of this management are then channelled back to the community in the form of social funds,” Abdel stated.
