West Jakarta City Government Targets One RW in Each Subdistrict as Waste Sorting Example
The West Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jakbar) is targeting one neighbourhood unit (RW) in each subdistrict (there are 56 subdistricts) in its area to serve as a pilot for the waste sorting movement. West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah stated that currently, two RWs among those that have implemented temporary waste sorting are RW 07 Joglo and RW 09 Meruya Utara, which only leave residual waste for transport to the final disposal site. “We’ll see the before and after. At minimum, the residue will be reduced. For example, the waste sorting in RW 07 Joglo and RW 09 Meruya Utara as zero-waste examples. After sorting is carried out, there will be 56 RWs as pilots,” Iin said in Jakarta on Tuesday. The RWs that are ready will educate other RWs for the waste sorting programme. Iin mentioned three DKI Jakarta Provincial Government policies regulating waste management, namely Governor’s Instruction No. 5 of 2026 on the Waste Sorting and Processing Movement from the Source, Provincial Regulation No. 77 of 2020 on Household Waste Management, and Provincial Regulation No. 102 of 2021 on Waste Management Obligations in Areas and Companies. “Three DKI Jakarta Provincial Government policies on reducing waste from the source. However, why does waste accumulation still occur? Because we are not serious, not disciplined. From the beginning, we did not sort carefully, so it piles up again,” she said. “But now we do that, (waste reduction) starting from ourselves. Starting from our offices, for that I ask all responsible entities to move to carry out waste sorting,” she added.
