The West Jakarta Administration (Pemkot Jakbar) is accelerating the dredging of mud sediment in the connecting channels (PHB) at Perumnas Cengkareng Timur, Cengkareng District.

The Mayor of West Jakarta, Iin Mutmainnah, stated that this continuous dredging process is intended to immediately increase channel capacity, thereby reducing the potential for flooding.

“The dredged mud is being transported to the Tegal Alur Cemetery in Walungan, Kalideres, to significantly reduce flood points and stagnant water by 2027,” said Iin during an inspection of the dredging site in West Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Iin, sediment dredging in several channels will continue until December 2026.

Meanwhile, the Head of the West Jakarta Water Resources Department, Mustajab, noted that the sediment dredging in the Perumnas Cengkareng connecting channels began in the second week of September.

“The mud dredging initially starts from the SMK Cinta Kasih Tzu Chi school, and downstream, there is a flood control pump with a capacity of six cubic metres per second,” he explained.

The dredging covers approximately 2.2 kilometres, with a channel width of about eight metres and a dredging depth of up to 1.5 metres.

“If all parts of the channel are dredged, the volume of sediment that can be removed is estimated to reach 245,000 cubic metres, which will be stored at a site near the location,” he said.

Mustajab explained that the scope of the connecting channels includes the Perumnas area, the Buddha Tzu Chi Foundation area, and the area adjacent to the Jakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR) toll road. The entire catchment area directs towards the Perumnas pump.

Currently, sediment dredging is being conducted at 13 water channel points. Several new points have also been added, including the Grogol River on Jalan Latumenten and the Grogol River in Kemanggisan.

“The work has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, and our system involves moving between different dredging locations,” Mustajab concluded.
