West Bangka KONI Chairman and Treasurer Detained for Alleged Grant Fund Corruption
The Bangka Belitung Regional Police have detained the Chairman and Treasurer of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) for West Bangka Regency for the 2020-2024 period. Both were detained in connection with an alleged corruption case involving KONI grant funds.
Head of Public Relations for the Bangka Belitung Regional Police, Commissioner Agus Sugiyarso, confirmed the detention of the two suspects, identified by the initials MA and MEP. They are being held at the Bangka Belitung Regional Police Detention Centre.
“Yes, it is correct. We have received information that MA and MEP, the Chairman and Treasurer, have been detained at the police detention centre effective Tuesday, 23 June 2026,” Agus stated on Wednesday (24/6).
Agus explained that the detention was carried out after investigators named the two KONI West Bangka officials from the 2020-2024 period as suspects in the alleged corruption of grant funds. “The detention of MA and MEP is a compulsory measure by investigators after both were named as suspects,” he clarified.
According to Agus, the suspects were named after Sub-Directorate III for Corruption Crimes of the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Bangka Belitung Regional Police elevated the case status to the investigation stage. During the investigation process, Sub-Directorate III investigators examined 72 witnesses. The two suspects had also previously undergone questioning as witnesses before their legal status was upgraded.
“So these two suspects were previously examined as witnesses. Then, after investigators worked to collect a series of evidence, they finally determined the status of both as suspects and they will immediately undergo further examination,” Agus said.
Agus noted that based on the investigation results, the two suspects are alleged to have misused the KONI grant budget for the 2020-2024 period for personal interests or expenditures outside the budget work plan. “There is sufficient evidence that they misused this KONI budget for personal interests or outside the budget work plan, resulting in state losses of Rp835,422,845 according to the auditor’s calculations,” he stated.
Investigators are continuing their examination of the two suspects to deepen the case of the alleged corruption of the West Bangka KONI grant funds.
