West and North Jakarta Have the Most Slum Neighbourhoods, DKI Provincial Government to Address Them Soon
With several areas becoming priority neighbourhoods, particularly in densely populated regions, the highest numbers are in West Jakarta and North Jakarta,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Pramono mentioned several densely populated areas such as Tambora as examples of regions needing more intensive handling. He said he had toured many sub-districts to directly observe conditions in the field. “Indeed, some are in the West, particularly for example Tambora and so on. We will go down to address that later,” he stated. He explained that the handling of slum neighbourhoods will be based on more accurate data from collaboration with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). This data serves as the basis for the government in determining intervention priorities and policies. Based on the latest census results, the number of slum RW in Jakarta is recorded at 211 out of a total of 2,749 RW. This figure is a decrease compared to 2017, which reached 445 RW. Pramono assessed that this decline is something to be grateful for, although he did not claim it entirely as the result of his administration’s work. According to him, the challenges in the field are becoming increasingly complex along with population growth. “With an increasing population and increasingly complex problems, there has been a decline of nearly 52 percent or more; in my opinion, this is something extraordinary,” he said. Meanwhile, BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti explained that the slum RW census was conducted using a combination of field methods and satellite imagery technology. This approach is said to improve accuracy in depicting regional conditions. “We calibrate direct field census with satellite imagery methodology, so the results are more accurate,” said Widy. In the future, the DKI Provincial Government together with BPS will continue verification of thousands of other RW to ensure the latest conditions, while strengthening the data base in efforts to address slum areas in Jakarta.
