West Aceh Regent Bans Pole Climbing Contest for 81st Independence Day

Celebrating the 17th of August should be more creative, and no longer involve methods that endanger safety.

West Aceh Regent Tarmizi has banned the greasy pole climbing competition (panjat pinang) held to commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, as it is considered to pose a risk to participants’ safety.

“Celebrating the 17th of August should be more creative, and no longer involve methods that endanger safety,” said Tarmizi in Meulaboh on Sunday.

According to Tarmizi, there have been a number of cases of fractures and other injuries suffered by members of the public while taking part in greasy pole climbing competitions during independence celebrations in West Aceh Regency.

“We need activities that are exciting, beneficial, and involve young people,” he said.

Tarmizi urged the public to abandon the greasy pole climbing tradition and replace it with activities that are safer, more beneficial, and have educational value.

The West Aceh Regency Government hopes that the various competitions held to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day this year will become a momentum for organising activities that are more creative, safe, and educational.
