Welcoming Ramadan and National Quran Recitation Competition, Semarang Mayor Distributes 20,000 Qurans
Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng commenced her Ramadan safari programme by attending a communal breaking of fast with residents at Al Mutohar Mosque on Jalan Tirtoyoso, East Semarang District, on Friday 20 February 2026. During the event, Agustina symbolically inaugurated the distribution of 20,000 translated Qurans for the people of Semarang.
The initiative is the result of a philanthropic collaboration between the Semarang Municipal Government and the Al-Fatihah Upasraya Foundation. Of the 20,000 copies prepared by donors (muwakif), 1,000 have been specifically allocated for residents in the East Semarang area as the first phase of distribution.
"This is an extraordinary form of social concern. I hope that through this distribution, the spirit of reading, understanding, and practising the teachings of the Quran in daily life will continue to grow," she said.
The translated copies are intended for various community groups, ranging from Islamic boarding schools, mosques, prayer rooms, and madrasas to mainstream schools. The measure is viewed as a tangible effort to strengthen the religious character and moral values of the community.
Agustina also stated that the Quran distribution drive serves as an important moment for the people of Semarang in anticipation of the prestigious National Quran Recitation Competition (MTQ Nasional), which will be held in Semarang in September 2026.
"Semarang will host the National MTQ. Therefore, let us strengthen our spiritual readiness from now on. Let us make improvements, and demonstrate that Semarang is a comfortable city with clean streets and residents who are very welcoming to visitors. May this spirit of Quran recitation enliven the atmosphere of religious outreach in every corner of the city," Agustina said.
The symbolic handover in East Semarang marks the beginning of a religious literacy movement that will reach all sub-districts across Semarang throughout the holy month of Ramadan. Agustina expressed her hope that such collaborations would strengthen Islamic brotherhood whilst reinforcing the Semarang Cerdas (Smart Semarang) pillar through deeper understanding of the sacred values of the Quran.
"I hope this initiative not only assists those in need of copies of the Quran, but also serves as a means to strengthen bonds between residents," she said.
