Weekend trip to Yogyakarta on Bogowonto train? Over 91,000 passengers choose southern route in early 2026
Between January and April 2026, Bogowonto train passenger numbers rose to 91,892, up from 89,236 in the same period of 2025. Weekend travel to Yogyakarta remains popular among the public in early 2026. The Bogowonto train service between Lempuyangan and Pasarsenen stations recorded growth in passengers, serving 91,892 customers from January to April 2026, up from 89,236 in the same period last year. The Bogowonto train is a popular service connecting Jakarta and Yogyakarta via Java’s southern route. The route passes through various cities with distinct characteristics, from Cirebon’s coastal areas, Banyumas’ agricultural zones, to the mountainous and rice-field landscapes of western Yogyakarta. Anne Purba, KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, said the growth in Bogowonto passengers reflects high public mobility on the Jakarta-Yogyakarta corridor, one of Java’s busiest routes. ‘The Bogowonto service caters to diverse travel needs, including tourism, education, family visits, and business trips. The passenger growth in early 2026 demonstrates public interest in comfortable train journeys directly linked to city hubs,’ said Anne. The Bogowonto currently offers Executive and New Generation Economy classes on the route from Pasarsenen Station to Lempuyangan Station. Morning departures from Yogyakarta and evening ones from Jakarta make it popular with passengers seeking to maximise weekend time in both cities. Along the journey, passengers enjoy the unique southern route scenery, distinct from Java’s northern line. Entering Kutoarjo, Kebumen, and Purwokerto, the vast rice fields, rivers, and hills form part of the scenic journey sought by long-distance rail travellers. The areas served by the Bogowonto train also feature growing tourist potential. Yogyakarta remains a top national destination for culture, cuisine, and heritage sites, while Purwokerto and Banyumas attract visitors with natural attractions like Baturraden and popular weekend traditional food hubs. The Bogowonto service has long been a favoured economy-class option for Yogyakarta-Jakarta travel, bringing it close to the public. With New Generation facilities, passengers now enjoy more comfortable journeys, including air conditioning, charging points, and in-transit meals. ‘Trains offer a different travel rhythm. Many passengers use weekends for relaxed journeys, watching cityscapes change through the window. The Bogowonto remains a preferred choice for safe, comfortable, and memorable southern route travel,’ Anne concluded.
