Weekend Holiday Sees Foreign Tourists Flood Batam Entry Points
The influx of international tourists through Sekupang, Batam Centre, and Harbourbay ports in Batu Ampar, Batam City, Riau Islands, increased significantly during the weekend holiday. From morning until afternoon, thousands of overseas travellers crowded the arrival terminals. The majority of these tourists originated from Singapore and Malaysia, visiting Batam for holidays, shopping, culinary experiences, and short family getaways.
Observations showed heavy congestion starting from the ferry arrival areas. Passengers disembarking from ships were seen moving towards immigration document checkpoints. Long queues were also visible around the terminal exits, money exchange booths, and the main port concourses. Many tourists arrived in groups or with families, carrying luggage and shopping bags, while waiting for pickups or arranging online transport to proceed to shopping centres, hotels, and restaurants across Batumn.
To maintain smooth passenger mobility, port officials and security personnel implemented traffic management at several points. Barriers were installed in strategic areas, particularly around the ‘Arrival’ gates, to prevent arriving passengers from clashing with those waiting for pickups or departing passengers.
An operational officer at Batam Harbour, Cetre Efendi, noted that the increase in international tourists during weekends has become a recurring trend at Harbourbay International Port, particularly from Singapore and Malaysia. He stated that the surge was spread evenly from morning to afternoon, requiring more intensive management of passenger flows to ensure terminal activities remained smooth.
This surge in foreign visitors has also impacted economic activities surrounding the ports. Numerous coffee shops, restaurants, retail stores, money changers, and transport services experienced an increase in customers. In the commercial areas connected to the ports, many tourists were seen resting after their sea journeys, utilising the time to enjoy food and beverages while waiting for transport to their destinations.
This influx serves as a positive signal for Batam’s tourism sector. Due to its proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, Batam remains a favourite destination because of its short travel distance, easy maritime access, and diverse range of shopping, culinary, spa, and family entertainment options. Harbourbay International Port, in particular, serves as a strategic gateway via direct routes from HarbourFront, Singapore.
However, the surge in arrivals during the long weekend has not yet been fully monitored by the Batam City Tourism Office. The Head of the Batam City Tourism Office, Ardiwiranata, admitted that he had not yet received precise data regarding the number of international tourists entering through Harbourbay during this period. This lack of data is noted as a significant issue, as arrival numbers through international ports are a vital indicator for measuring Batam’s tourism sector performance.
The Batam City Government continues to encourage increased foreign visits by optimising international entry points, promoting tourism, and developing creative economy and tourism zones. The weekend surge is expected to provide a positive impact on the hotel, restaurant, transport, and trade sectors, as well as small businesses in Batam. The circulation of money from shopping, culinary, accommodation, and tourism services remains a key driver of local economic growth.
Nevertheless, the high volume of arrivals presents challenges for port managers and the local government. Strengthening coordination, monitoring visitor data, managing queues, ensuring transport availability, and improving terminal comfort are essential to ensure tourists receive a positive impression upon arriving in Batam.
