Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding the potential for light, moderate to heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds across various major cities in Indonesia on Wednesday.

As quoted from the official BMKG website in Jakarta, forecaster Vita explained that convergence zones generally extend across the Indian Ocean south-west of Banten, the northern coast of Australia, the Halmahera Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, Maluku waters, and the Indian Ocean west of Aceh.

These conditions are capable of increasing the potential for rain cloud development along the areas traversed by the convergence or confluence zones.

Accordingly, the agency forecasts that several major cities will potentially experience moderate to very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds, including Banda Aceh, Medan, Bengkulu, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, Palu and Manado.

Meanwhile, several other major cities are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, namely Tanjung Pinang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Palangka Raya, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Kendari, Mamuju, Makassar, Ambon, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, Jayawijaya and Merauke.

Several other major cities are forecast to experience only cloudy conditions today, including Jambi, Padang and Gorontalo.

Previously on Monday (17 February), the BMKG reminded fishermen and other stakeholders to remain vigilant regarding the potential for high waves that could occur in a number of North Sumatran waters.

"Waves of 1.25 to 2.5 metres are likely to occur in several waters of North Sumatra from 18 to 20 February 2026," said BMKG forecaster at the Class II Maritime Meteorological Station Belawan, Christen Marpaung.

The high waves could occur in the Western Waters of North Sumatra, the Western Waters of the Nias Islands, the Western Waters of the Batu Islands, the Eastern Waters of the Nias Islands, the Batu Islands Waters and the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands.
