Wedding Celebration in Iran Turns into Tragedy Following US Attack
A United States military strike in the coastal region of Iran has transformed a wedding celebration into a tragedy. At least four people, including a child, were killed, and 68 others were injured after the attack hit the Kuhestak area in Hormozgan Province, near the Strait of Hormuz, on Tuesday (1/9) night local time.
Video footage circulating in Iran on Wednesday (2/9) shows the devastated wedding venue. Wedding decorations were scattered across the ground, while shoes and building debris were left amidst the panic. In one recording, the sounds of people screaming could be heard as rescuers arrived to evacuate victims. Another video showed a man retrieving a white sandal adorned with glittering straps from the rubble.
“You evil people have attacked citizens’ homes and turned their wedding into a funeral,” said a man appearing in the video, as broadcast by the Fars news agency. Iranian state television also aired footage from the scene, where a reporter displayed charred metal fragments, identifying them as parts of an American missile that caused the tragedy.
The Iranian Red Crescent stated that the attack occurred in Kuhestable, a coastal town in the southern part of the country. The strike followed a US announcement of operations against several targets linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the attack was carried out against IRGC targets in response to alleged attempts to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US military personnel stationed in the region.
While reports of civilian casualties emerged following the strike, a CENTCOM spokesperson maintained that US forces did not target civilians. The US has not yet provided specific details regarding the targets hit in Kuhestak. The attack also caused significant damage to several towers and telecommunications and internet facilities in the Hormozgan Province, leading to communication network disruptions in the surrounding area. State television showed a collapsed communication tower with twisted metal frames scattered across the road. Iranian media estimates the tower was located approximately 140 metres from the wedding venue.
On Wednesday morning, the Iranian Red Crescent released aerial footage showing the damage after sunrise. The roof of a building appeared breached, with debris and rubble filling the surrounding area and nearby alleys. The bride’s father, Ali Mallahi, described the attack as a deeply distressing event. “I truly do not know what to say. Thank God the number of casualties was not higher,” Mallahi said in a recording broadcast by state television.
Footage also showed injured children receiving treatment in hospitals. One man, suffering from head wounds, recounted the moments before the explosion, stating he was heading to the wedding when he heard fighter jets overhead. He testified that many women and children sustained severe injuries. “When we arrived, there was an explosion. It was very powerful. Even before I arrived, debris and building fragments hit my head and face, causing me to lose consciousness,” he said. He added, “Many children and women suffered horrific injuries. They are all ordinary citizens.”
According to reports, the bride, groom, and their close families survived the attack. The strike in Kuhestak occurs amidst ongoing conflict. Although a ceasefire reached last April temporarily halted the first phase of large-scale hostilities, sporadic clashes continue, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, the IRGC stated it had conducted coordinated missile and drone attacks against US bases in Erbil, in the autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq. Iran has vowed to respond firmly following the US attack in Sirik that struck the wedding and caused dozens of casualties. The number of injured from the military strike in Hormozgan has risen to 68, and Iran has reaffirmed its intention to retaliate.
