Weda Bay Nickel Secures ISO 14001 and 45001 Certifications to Strengthen ESG
PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) has officially announced its success in obtaining two major international standard certifications: ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (K3). This achievement was attained after the company underwent a rigorous independent audit process by an international certification body. This step serves as an important milestone in strengthening the compliance framework and responsible operational practices in their operational area in North Maluku. The acquisition of these certifications is an integral part of Weda Bay Nickel’s sustainable journey in fulfilling its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap. Amid global spotlight on the nickel mining industry, these standards provide concrete evidence of the company’s commitment to sustainability. ISO 14001 assesses the effectiveness of systems for managing environmental aspects, including the identification of risks and mitigation of operational impacts. Meanwhile, ISO 45001 sets high standards in K3 management to minimise workplace accident risks and safeguard the health of all personnel. The Head of Mining Engineering at PT Weda Bay Nickel, Iwan Kurniawan, emphasised that these certifications are not merely administrative fulfilments but a strategy to enhance competitiveness in the international market. “The ISO 14001 and 45001 certifications reflect our structured approach to ensuring safe operations and sustainable environmental performance improvements. These standards are essential elements in maintaining operational reliability and meeting the expectations of global stakeholders,” said Iwan. Currently, the global battery and electric vehicle (EV) industry demands high transparency in supply chains. International certifications serve as primary benchmarks for global customers in evaluating suppliers. With these ISO standards, Weda Bay Nickel strengthens its credibility as a provider of ethically and safely produced raw materials. Moving forward, the company ensures that the certified management systems will continue to be evaluated through periodic internal audits and ongoing reviews. This is done to ensure that the company’s operations remain aligned with evolving regulatory dynamics and global industry standards.
