Weda Bay Nickel Receives ISO Recognition for Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Systems
Weda Bay Nickel has successfully obtained ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, two major international standards for environmental management systems and occupational health and safety (OHS). These certifications were issued following the completion of an independent audit process by an international certification body in accordance with global standards.
The attainment of these certifications demonstrates Weda Bay Nickel’s commitment to strengthening its compliance framework and responsible, sustainable operational practices. It also forms part of the company’s ongoing journey along its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap, which is increasingly a primary focus in the nickel mining industry.
As part of the obtained standards, ISO 14001 assesses the effectiveness of environmental aspect management systems in operational activities, including risk identification, impact control, and continuous improvement mechanisms. Meanwhile, ISO 45001 recognises high standards in occupational health and safety management to minimise accidents and health issues in the workplace.
The Head of Mining Engineering at PT Weda Bay Nickel, Iwan Kurniawan, handed over the ISO 14001 certificate to representatives of the international certification body during a handover ceremony in Central Halmahera on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
To meet the requirements of both standards, Weda Bay Nickel underwent a comprehensive audit and certification process conducted by a reputable international certification body, encompassing documentation review and on-site implementation verification. The certified management system applies to all operational activities and workforce across the company’s mining operations in North Maluku.
Iwan Kurniawan, Head of Mining Engineering at PT Weda Bay Nickel, emphasised that the ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications strengthen the company’s operational standards while enhancing its competitiveness in the global market.
“These ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications reflect our structured approach to ensuring safe operations and the continuous improvement of environmental and occupational health and safety performance. These standards are essential elements in maintaining operational reliability and meeting global stakeholder expectations,” he stated.
Amid rising demands for transparency and ESG compliance in the battery and electric vehicle industry supply chains, international standards certifications such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 serve as key benchmarks in supplier evaluations by global customers. These requirements aim to ensure that raw materials are produced in accordance with internationally recognised environmental and occupational health and safety standards.
Weda Bay Nickel views the attainment of these certifications as strengthening the company’s credibility in meeting international customer requirements while supporting the implementation of its long-term ESG strategy.
The company assures that the certified environmental and occupational health and safety management systems will continue to be evaluated through periodic reviews, internal audits, and continuous improvements, in line with regulatory dynamics and global industry standards.
