Weaving New Nodes for Jakarta's Transportation, from Manggarai to JIS

The direction of Jakarta’s public transport development is now moving towards a greater goal: ensuring every mode is interconnected so that residents’ journeys are not interrupted mid-way. One of the new nodes being prepared is Manggarai. The Jakarta LRT line, which previously terminated at Velodrome, will be extended to the Manggarai area, opening access from North Jakarta to the city centre in a single journey. The construction of the Jakarta LRT corridor for the Pegangsaan Dua–Manggarai route has reached 95 percent completion. The 12.5-kilometre line will feature 11 stations, including five new ones at Rawamangun, Pramuka, Kayu Manis, Matraman, and Manggarai. Governor of Jakarta Pramono Anung stated that all girder lifting works have been completed. The current focus is on finishing the tracks from Matraman to Manggarai, targeted for completion by the end of July 2026. The corridor is scheduled to be inaugurated in August 2026. The journey from Pegangsaan Dua to Manggarai will take approximately 28 minutes. The presence of this new line will provide additional travel options for residents who previously faced severe traffic congestion when travelling from the northern areas to the city centre. Manggarai was chosen because it is already a major meeting point for the KRL Commuter Line and the Airport Rail Link. With the arrival of the Jakarta LRT, Manggarai’s function as a transit node will be significantly strengthened. All stations along the Pegangsaan Dua–Manggarai corridor are also designed to be connected with Transjakarta bus services, allowing passengers to switch modes without long additional journeys. The corridor is projected to gradually serve 60,000 to 80,000 passengers per day, with each train set having a maximum capacity of 275 passengers. The total investment for the construction reaches Rp 12.5 trillion, covering tracks, stations, infrastructure, and supporting facilities. Governor Pramono expressed hope that the President would inaugurate the line in August, marking a milestone that will change the face of Jakarta by strengthening public transport connectivity. The development plan does not stop at Manggarai. The Jakarta provincial government is preparing an extension of the line to Dukuh Atas, spanning approximately two kilometres. Construction is planned to begin in early 2027 and is targeted for completion in 2028, with an estimated budget of around Rp 2.7 trillion sourced from the Jakarta Regional Budget. This extension will bring the Jakarta LRT into one of the capital’s busiest transit areas. Dukuh Atas is already served by the MRT Jakarta, Jabodebek LRT, KRL Commuter Line, Soekarno-Hatta Airport Rail Link, and Transjakarta. Governor Pramono noted that once connected to Dukuh Atas, the entire network would be fully integrated, creating a new face for Jakarta’s transportation and strengthening connectivity with other modes, including the Whoosh High-Speed Train in future development phases. To ensure seamless transfers, the provincial government is also planning the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck. Targeted for completion by the end of 2028, this infrastructure will link six transport modes, including the Jakarta LRT. The pedestrian deck is designed to shorten transfer distances, improve pedestrian safety, and provide disability-friendly access. The area is also envisioned as a new public space in the heart of the city, expected to stimulate economic activity around the transit zone. The development opens opportunities for collaboration with the banking sector, regional-owned enterprises, and other stakeholders through creative financing schemes, reducing the reliance on the regional budget. In North Jakarta, the strengthening of public transport is realised through the activation of the JIS KRL Station and the opening of access to Ancol. The JIS–Ancol Integrated Infrastructure was inaugurated on 22 June 2026. The package includes the JIS KRL Station, a connecting pedestrian bridge, and the Ancol Gate. This new access point serves the Jakarta International Stadium, particularly during matches, concerts, or large-scale events. JIS and Ancol have complementary functions, with JIS as a sports and entertainment centre and Ancol as a major tourist destination. The integration is seen as a crucial step towards a more modern and comfortable Jakarta, providing residents with more travel options and reducing dependence on private vehicles.
