Weaver Regeneration a Challenge for Sukoharjo's Goyor Weaving Centre
Amid the hum of factory machines offering employment choices for the younger generation, weavers in Pojok Village, Tawangsari, Sukoharjo, Central Java, continue to diligently preserve the heritage of goyor weaving. Using non-machine looms (ATBM), they complete thread after thread into cloth that requires precision and patience. However, the sustainability of the craft faces a regeneration challenge. Some young people choose to migrate or work as factory labourers because it is considered to offer more attractive income. Meanwhile, weavers receive wages of around Rp55,000 for every four metres of cloth worked on over one to two days.
