Weather Forecast in Indonesia Today: Caution! Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Heavy Rain
BADAN Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) issued an early warning regarding potential extreme weather affecting several Indonesian regions on Friday, 22 May 2026. The formation of cyclonic circulations and convergence zones has been reported as the main trigger for the growth of rain clouds with heavy to very heavy intensity. BMKG forecaster Alya Sausan revealed that the cyclonic circulation is currently observed at four strategic points: the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu, the Makassar Strait, the Maluku Sea, and the northern Papua-Pacific Ocean.
“This condition significantly increases the potential for rainfall cloud growth around the cyclonic circulation areas as well as along convergence or confluent zones,” Alya said during the official weather briefing in Jakarta. Based on the latest atmospheric dynamics analysis, BMKG asked the public and local authorities to heighten preparedness, especially in the regions predicted to experience high-intensity rainfall: BMKG also detailed forecasts for other major Indonesian cities, categorised by rainfall intensity.
In addition to potential rainfall, the convergence zones extend from the western Indian Ocean off Aceh to West Sumatra, as well as in Central Kalimantan and the Banda Sea. Hazy conditions are also forecast in Jambi. The public is urged to monitor weather updates through official BMKG channels to anticipate hydrometeorological impacts such as floods or landslides. (Ant/H-4) BMKG forecasts that the Jakarta region will be drenched with rain of moderate to heavy intensity on Friday (22/5) afternoon and evening. Check details.
BMKG notes that cyclonic circulations formed in the western Indian Ocean off Bengkulu, the Makassar Strait, the Maluku Sea, and the northern Papua Pacific Ocean. The weather forecast for Central Java today, 21 May 2026, indicates extreme weather potential in nine districts on Thursday (21/5), with high waves in southern waters and high tides (rob). The DIY BMKG warns of El Niño 2026 potentially triggering extreme drought in Yogyakarta from June to October. See advisories for farmers and residents.
