Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has released weather forecasts for the early Eid mudik period of 2026. Overall, weather conditions across various Indonesian regions are anticipated to be relatively conducive, though the public is advised to remain vigilant regarding potential rainfall in several areas.

Weather forecast information from BMKG serves as an important reference for people planning to travel during the mudik exodus. By monitoring weather developments, travellers can make more informed preparations to ensure safe and comfortable journeys during the 2026 Eid mudik period.

Early Mudik Weather Relatively Conducive

According to a BMKG press statement on 14 March 2026, atmospheric conditions across most Indonesian regions at the start of the mudik period remain relatively conducive. Nevertheless, rainfall potential in several areas warrants careful attention.

BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani reminded the public to remain calm yet vigilant regarding weather developments, emphasising the importance of accessing information from official sources.

“Continue monitoring updated weather forecasts for land, sea and air through various official BMKG channels to adjust your mudik travel plans,” Faisal stated in the BMKG press release on Saturday, 14 March 2026.

According to BMKG, public readiness in monitoring updated weather forecasts constitutes an important element in supporting safe mudik travel.

Atmospheric Factors Triggering Rain Potential

Deputy Head of Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, explained that current atmospheric dynamics are influenced by several global weather phenomena.

He noted that Madden Julian Oscillation activity remains active in the southern and eastern Indonesian regions. Additionally, Equatorial Rossby waves and Kelvin waves have been detected in the vicinity of Indonesian territory during the period of 13 to 20 March 2026.

The combination of these phenomena strengthens atmospheric dynamics supporting the development of rain clouds. This condition is further supported by relatively high humidity levels and a somewhat unstable atmospheric state.

Regions Potentially Experiencing Heavy Rain

BMKG forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall potentially occurring between 14 and 17 March 2026 in parts of Sumatra and portions of Central and East Java.

Subsequently, between 18 and 20 March 2026, rainfall is also anticipated in parts of South Sulawesi and Papua.

This situation warrants attention from people undertaking mudik travel to continue monitoring weather developments along their routes.

Potential Maritime and Aviation Transport Disruptions

BMKG has also identified potential widespread development of Cumulonimbus clouds along several flight routes. Such clouds are likely to emerge particularly in the Maluku Sea region and northern Papua.

The probability of cloud formation is estimated to exceed 75 per cent, warranting attention for aviation activities in these areas.

“BMKG also predicts potential high waves exceeding 2.5 metres are likely to occur in the Maluku Sea and northern Papua waters, which could impact maritime transport activities,” said Andri Ramdhani in the BMKG press statement.

Additionally, coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant regarding potential tidal flooding (banjir rob) anticipated to occur intermittently from 14 to 19 March 2026 in several regions.

These regions include North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, and parts of Kalimantan.

Weather Monitoring and Vigilance Advisory

BMKG’s Acting Director of Public Meteorology, Ida Pramuwardani, urged the public to regularly monitor weather information before commencing mudik travel.

According to her, people may utilise the InfoBMKG application or BMKG’s official website to obtain the latest and most accurate weather forecast information.

Additionally, mudik travellers are advised to prepare emergency supplies and increase vigilance when driving in rainy conditions. The public should also ensure their homes are secure from potential hydrometeorological risks before departure.

BMKG has also encouraged the public to remain calm and trust only weather information from official government channels to prevent the spread of unverified information.
