We need leaders who can inspire

There are several incidents that have led people to question
the leadership of President Megawati Soekarnoputri. One of these
is the support she has given for the nomination of Sutiyoso for a
second term as governor of Jakarta.

This support reminds us of the New Order administration. With
his unique style, then president Soeharto usually blessed a
candidate he supported for a particular position.

In the New Order period, people were afraid to refuse
Soeharto's wishes, but at present this is not entirely true with
respect to Megawati.

From her experience as chief administrator of this country,
Megawati should have learned that to listen to the voice of the
people is far more important than to listen to the opinions of
her limited inner circle. The latter often block her view and
prevent her from hearing the people.

A changing era demands a different model of leadership. It is
now absolutely necessary for a leader to listen to the voice of
the people. Megawati must be able to capture the spirit of this
era.
