We have to take care of the shipping company, not the docks

The progress of a shipping company cannot be separated from the progress of the shipping industry because the two are related and operate side by side. The development of the shipping world depends on the volume and number of ships in use. The more ships a company has, the higher its shipping volume. This in turn enhances the docking business.

PT Jasa Marina Indah (JMI) was establish in 1977 in Jakarta, with its early activity being a marine contractor. In 1982, after five years of experience and hard work, the company built and began operating a graving dock in Semarang port.

To face the challenge of competition in the globalization era, PT Jasa Marina Indah has gained international-class technology and professionals.

In 1985, the company was given an integrated ship building and maintenance contract, and it built Unit I, Jasa Marina. This facility is for the construction of ships 102 meters by 21.5 meters with a capacity of 5,000 Et. Ships already built at Unit I are CARAKA JAYA SHIPS, a 3,650 deadweight ton type general cargo ship, ordered by PT Pann Multi Finance, and a 3,650 dwt semicontainer ship, ordered by PT Pal Indonesia.

In 1987, the international and domestic shipping sectors showed bright prospects. As new ships being built automatically received maintenance services from the same company, this opportunity enabled PT Jasa Marina Indah to build PT Jasa Marina Indah II. With a 8.2 hectare graving dock, Unit II can construct ships with capacities up to 35,000 dwt as well as multilevel ships.

PT Jasa Marina Indah's president director, Joeswanto Karidjodimedjo, who is also the company's founder, said: "It's our tradition as a maritime country to have a strong fleet and shipping industry. One that does not rely on other countries."

PT Jasa Marina Indah's success is the result of thoughtfulness and skill at the main base, to provide in-house training and to regularly send technicians to be trained in other countries.

Joeswanto said, "With greater company efficiency, our manpower can reach better results.

"If we look at things in detail, work done by PT Jasa Marina Indah is equal to that of companies that have been operating for hundreds of years.

"With the need for a national shipping industry to answer to the challenge of the export sector, the most important thing is that all efforts and preparations must be toward the globalization era.

"We are ready to compete internationally."

He said the condition of Indonesia's shipping sector is hampered in some respects, such as a state income tax that is levied on docking companies while the same tax is not levied on shipping companies.

"It's not fair to differentiate."

Joeswanto also questioned the need for foreign shipping companies to operate in Indonesia. This is causing the growth of Indonesian shipping companies to be weak and their loads less. The result will be that companies will not have the capital for renovations and shipbuilding, he said.

Joeswanto hopes for government assistance in subsidies. "When shipping companies grow well and healthy, automatically, the shipping industry will develop. So, what we have to take care of is shipping, not the docking."
