As an Indonesian citizen I am proud of learning that
Abdurrahman Wahid has been installed as chairman of the World
Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP) at its recent congress in
Riva del Garda, northern Italy.

I agree with legislator Sukowaluyo who said that the
appointment has enhanced the image of Indonesia in the world
community.

It is my hope that Abdurrahman Wahid will help solve the
problems of disputing nations in the world and hence contribute
to the realization of global peace.

In his speech at the Dian Interfide Institute in Yogyakarta on
Aug. 8 Abdurrahman Wahid said: "The deepest impulse of man which
unites all human beings is still buried under a thick layer of
prejudice, anxiety and indifference to other religious believers.
Hence, the solution to mankind's problems through a religious
approach will not be successful."

He also said that a common stance is yet to emerge in
addressing mankind's fundamental issues globally, a problem which
should have been faced by all believers: harassment on mankind's
dignity, injustice, stifling of creativity, the disappearance of
the freedom of expression and the lack of access the common
people have in taking part in determining the future of the
country.

I pray that God will bless him in his work in the
organization.
