WBC yet to decide Jakarta a host

JAKARTA (JP): The World Boxing Council (WBC) has yet to decide if Jakarta will host the 39th convention next year. Chairman of the Indonesian Boxing Association Chandru G. Lalwani said WBC will announce its decision in three months.

"If we fail to host the convention, we will be able to stage it in 2002," said Chandru, who is also the WBC's financial executive member, on Tuesday.

He said that Indonesia had a greater chance to be the host as other candidates -- Tunisia, South Korea and Washington -- have yet to respond to WBC's offer to be the host.

"Washington is less favored because WBC do not have a good relationship with the country's boxing commission. But Tunisia and South Korea support us as the host and they have withdrawn from the candidacy," he said.

He said that over 500 participants, including promoters, boxers, managers and coaches from all over the world will attend the convention. (ivy)
