WASHINGTON (AFP): The World Bank announced yesterday loans for projects in Thailand, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Kirghizstan totaling more than US$400 million.
The bank awarded $113.5 million in two loans aimed at improving the Thai educational system. One credit of 81.9 million will be for projects aimed at training secondary school teachers and upgrading classrooms; a second of 31.6 million is aimed at technical education.
In Indonesia, the bank awarded $86.9 million for upgrading the highway system that has become increasingly congested. The bank will provide 52 percent of the financing for the project.
A $180 million loan was granted to help upgrade the banking system in Kazakhstan, including developing privatization plans and a system of interbank payments.
