Way Kambas National Park Ablaze, Firefighting Efforts Still Underway

Forest in Way Kambas National Park, East Lampung Regency, Lampung, has been burning since Friday (21/8). Firefighting efforts are still ongoing.

In a video widely circulated on social media, flames can be seen rapidly consuming forest areas that have dried out due to the dry season.

Head of the Way Kambas National Park Office, MHD Zaidi, confirmed the incident. However, he was unable to confirm the extent of the area and the regions affected by the fire.

“It is true, a fire has been burning since yesterday afternoon. At the moment, a joint team from the park office, assisted by the TNI-Polri and volunteers, is still carrying out firefighting efforts,” said Zaidi, as reported by Detik, Saturday (22/8).

“Data collection is still in progress. There are several obstacles, including access that is difficult for vehicles to pass through,” said Zaidi.

Similar fires have previously struck the forest area of Way Kambas National Park. In January 2026, a fire scorched more than 2,600 hectares of land.

In this year’s dry season, it is predicted that the area burned will be larger than in previous fire events.
