The Denpasar Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Office (BBMKG) Region III has forecast that sea wave heights could reach six metres in the waters south of Bali during the period of 5-8 August. The extreme weather conditions are triggered by atmospheric dynamics resulting from the active Australian monsoon.

“The high sea waves currently occurring in the waters south of Bali are due to the active Australian monsoon,” said BBMKG Region III Denpasar forecaster Luh Nyoman Didik Tri Utami in Denpasar on Tuesday (4/8).

Didik explained that the monsoon activity has triggered consistently strong winds moving from the east to the south, with speeds expected to reach 25 knots, or around 46 kilometres per hour.

According to her, strong winds blowing unimpeded across the open waters of the Indian Ocean transfer energy intensively to the sea surface. As a result, this flow of energy pushes the sea surface to form high waves as it enters shallower waters.

In addition to the waters south of Bali, which could be struck by waves of 4 to 6 metres, similar potential is expected in the southern part of the Lombok Strait during the same period.

Meanwhile, other waters such as the Badung Strait and the southern Bali Strait are forecast to experience wave heights of between 2 and 4 metres. In the northern part of the Lombok Strait, sea wave heights are predicted to range between 1.25 and 2.5 metres.

BBMKG Denpasar has warned that strong winds and high waves pose a significant risk to the safety of shipping activities. Ferry operators are therefore urged to heighten their vigilance when wind speeds reach 21 knots and wave heights touch 2.5 metres.

A similar appeal has been directed at barge operators, advising them to be extra cautious when wind speeds reach 16 knots with wave heights of 1.5 metres. For fishing boat users, BBMKG has reminded them of the dangers when winds blow at more than 15 knots (around 27 kilometres per hour) and waves reach 1.25 metres.

BBMKG has urged coastal communities and marine tourism operators to regularly monitor the latest weather developments through official BMKG channels, both via the social media accounts @infobmkg and @bmkgbali as well as the Info BMKG application. (Ant/P-4)
