The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has conducted sting operations against 11 regional heads so far in 2026, including the most recent case involving West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini. Deputy Chairman of House Commission III, Ahmad Sahroni, acknowledged the existence of a vicious cycle of high political costs experienced by regional heads. He initially expressed appreciation for the KPK’s consistent efforts in apprehending corrupt regional heads. He stated that the phenomenon of numerous regional heads being caught by the KPK should serve as a lesson for other local officials. ‘We express our high appreciation for the KPK’s consistency in closely monitoring corruption cases committed by officials in Indonesia. However, this phenomenon of many regional heads being arrested must serve as a warning to other regional heads not to play games with corruption, no matter how small,’ Sahroni said when contacted on Wednesday (22/7/2026). Sahroni then spoke about the high political costs that have become a vicious cycle in Indonesia. Nevertheless, he is confident that with the KPK’s consistency, this can be gradually reduced. ‘Indeed, there is a vicious cycle of high political costs. However, I think with the KPK’s consistency, hopefully, it can gradually change the behaviour of political democracy in Indonesia,’ he said. He also expressed hope that the KPK would begin to take part in warning prospective regional head candidates. With strict warnings and tight supervision from the KPK, he said, candidates might restrain themselves from spending excessive political funds, thereby reducing the urge to seek illicit gains. ‘With this strict supervision from the KPK, I hope that when they are about to register as regional head candidates, all candidates will be aware that once they take office, they will be closely monitored by the KPK. Thus, during their campaigns, they can restrain themselves from spending excessive political funds. I hope this is realised by all competing regional head candidates. Hopefully, this can improve the quality of democracy in Indonesia,’ he said. It was previously reported that the KPK named West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini a suspect for alleged corruption involving project manipulation and bribe acceptance. The total receipts are suspected to have reached Rp 12.4 billion in cash and goods.
